Denver Colorado, immigrant from S. Africa. These days when they say, “you don’t sound like you are from around here” I say “no, I’m European-African-American” in the faint hope it might cause some thinking about the US and immigrants. That seldom works but oh well.
Too old and tired to have any passions left it seems.. still mildly interested in humanity, its bread and circuses and technology, so that will have to do. As a general rule I’d rather be backpacking in the mountains.
Really I just like to to hear other voices from other rooms, skeptical rational and studious preferred. This is particularly the case since 11/9 when we in the US all packed into a scary clown car and accelerated wildly into the unknown.

Clown car indeed. Recent US politics have really impressed on me the weaknesses of democracy. And the absolute need for an educated electorate if it is to work.

Geologist and medieval reenactor in NZ. Aside from rocks, I like mucking around with forgotten crafts from the paleolithic to the 19th century. Currently engaged in viking age woodworking, 19th century military leatherwork, and generic lost wax bronze casting plots.

First of all I owe you an apology for not getting back to you with my comments that I promised in the previous Pimp My Book Manuscript. It sort of coincided with a second consecutive breakdown, which has distanced me even further from my goal expressed in the previous de-lurking session: a postdoctoral position in archaeology. I don’t think I would describe myself as an archaeologist any longer, more a blog follower, although there is this lurking-inspired distant hint of creativity. It’s the closest I get to writing myself these days. So probably no further comments.

Yes, I’m OK, I think. Still not OK with being left by archaeology. Still getting used to living with an ASD diagnosis, which probably explains the oversharing and inappropriate confessions. Or maybe it’s this time of year again.

Left by archaeology as in you not getting a post-doc? I know how that feels.
Do you regret having yourself examined for possible ASD? I only hear about folks who are relieved to have an explanation for why everyone around them is incomprehensible.

Yes, it helped to explain a lot; no, I don’t regret it. I didn’t have or develop the skills to land myself a job, in or outside archaeology. I’m OK because I’m enrolled in a government work-disabled employment scheme for now, but it’s way below my intellectual capacity. In this sense de-lurking is my new-year’s resolution: I have to learn to express myself better, showcasing my capabilities. Thanks for taking an interest, happy holidays.

Well, I’m glad that you’re not just sitting at home alone doing nothing. We had a notorious case a few years back where a railway motorman with a long record of extreme dependability received an ASD diagnosis and lost his job. Because the state railway company isn’t allowed to employ crazy people, and a very long time ago Asperger Syndrome had made it onto the list of craziness types. But they changed the list and took the guy back.

Norwegian American (is there such a thing? well, yes there are nearly as many of us as Norwegians) Neonatologist in California, USA. I enjoy your particular Scandinavian take on things and am shocked, I say shocked, that there is selective nationalist hiring going on in Norwegian Academia.

Decided to de-lurk finally, after visiting the site for a few years now. I’m a former archaeologist now working in software (test engineer). I enjoy most of the topics that get posted here (including the paleogenetics although some of it goes over my head). Happy New Year and keep up the good work, Martin!

Re-De-lurking (having already de-lurked some years ago I think…). I’m an archaeologist from southern Germany, working on a DFG (German Research Foundation) financed project on Iron Age settlement archaeology. Interested in scandinavian iron age archaeology and regularly visiting sites and museums in Sweden and Denmark.

I hear 500-1 BC is a good period in southern Germany! Around lake Mälaren it is rich in postholes and ugly grave pottery, but very little else.
