Weekend Fun

  • Played the zombie movie boardgame Last Night On Earth and Airlines Europe, both very enjoyable.
  • Had a party where I couldn’t understand what anybody said since they spoke Mandarin, but I was happy being Grillmeister, waitor and dishwasher.
  • Logged five geocaches, which involved cycling around, climbing a tree and faffing about in the woods north of Älta. Saw the traces of a recent forest fire and found an abandoned camp used by homeless substance abusers (note the toothpaste and beer cans).

And you, Dear Reader?

  1. I practically overslept the weekend. Also, read a new SF novel by John Scalzi, and an inferior thriller by the author of The Bone Collector.
No interesting astronomical phenomena until the Perseids August 11-12, so no big deal that the midnight sun blocks vision.
Prometheus; Have not seen it. Skeptical about the ability to insert new interesting ideas in big-budget Hollywood SF films.
Read Peter Watt’s novelisation of the Crysis game instead: “Chrysis; Legion”

  2. I performed in the choir at Symphonic Fantasies Stockholm, a yearly computer games-themed concert hosted by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the Concert Hall.

The place was packed with hollering geeks and it was a quite amazing experience. I haven’t played any of the games (Playstation games from the mid-nineties, as I gather: Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross, Secret of Mana, Kingdom Heart) but the music was enjoyable enough. Some of it is clear pastiche, but other parts have etched themselves deeply into my brain by now.

One of the Japanese composers was there and he was treated as a rock star, as were the two Finnish guys who have scored everything for choir and orchestra. Orvar Säfström, alpha geek, was the presenter.

  3. I did some cooking for my moms birthday: Cucumber & jellyfish salad, Oven-baked lamb, Seaweed with garlic, Drunken chicken and some stir-fried asparagus.

  4. It is the European Championship(soccer) with some great games so far. Have search a lot of stores for a new bed and finally found one for a resobake price. Visited Uppåkra for the second weekend and talked with the guides because the number of visitors is not that large yet so they have time to answer my questions. I am also reading “Scania in Denmark, A Danish History until 1658”
