I just started a new job, teaching high school Swedish and English. These are two of my favourite subjects!
In order to teach my favourite subject of all, Scandinavian Prehistory, I had to do a PhD and travel to campuses hundreds of kilometres from my home. In 14 years of trying, I never got a longer gig than six months at 55%.
Now I’m going to teach high school at 80% for an open-ended number of months or years. It took me less than two weeks to get this gig. The commute is one hour. And converting all to full time, the salary is nearly the same as what they paid me at those universities.

I work supporting scientists with their computational issues at a university. I used to be one of those scientists, so I know for a fact that I make more money than most of the scientists I support.
And I get to do just the fun bits of my previous life – play with big computers – while working only full-time. I spent my first year trying to adjust to having actual free time again.

Congratulations. It sounds like a good fit and a decent gig.
One of the many reasons the US has been in decline for the last few decades is the low status accorded to K-12 (primary and secondary) teachers. Teachers aren’t paid very well here, and people of a certain political persuasion tend to blame them for everything “bad” going on in society. Result: people who might have gone into teaching 40 years ago are choosing easier and more lucrative professions instead. You get what you pay for.

Thank you! I had a blast today teaching the negotiable nature of literary classic-hood and the tension between aesthetic absolutism and relativism, plus doing shared classwide readings out of Pride & Prejudice and Robinson Crusoe.

Did any readers comment on the fact that Crusoe made his fortune in the slave trade?
Myself, I would recommend the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy (beginning with Altered Carbon) -it is bloody like hell, but has a protagonist that is not a bastard.
Changing nature -Does “American Psycho” count as documentary these days? Emotionally stunted psycho from New York ruins everything he touches…
And the stories of Roald Dahl sometimes feel different knowing he was an anti-semite; Are some baddies supposed to be jews?
